CGIAR Capacity Sharing Accelerator to convene South Asia Regional Workshop on Capacity Sharing

CGIAR Capacity Sharing Accelerator

The 23-24 June workshop in Varanasi, India, will bring together national agricultural research and extension systems, CGIAR centres, and regional partners to strengthen capacity sharing across South Asia. The CGIAR Capacity Sharing Accelerator will convene the South Asia Regional Capacity Sharing Needs Assessment Workshop from 23-24 June 2026 at the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre in Varanasi, India. The workshop will be co-convened with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) South Asia Regional Centre, and the International Potato Center (CIP) South Asia Regional Center. The regional consultation will bring together leaders from national agricultural research and extension systems, CGIAR centres, and regional partners to identify capacity gaps, existing strengths, and opportunities for deeper collaboration across South Asia. The workshop is part of CapSha’s efforts to operationalize capacity sharing as a core CGIAR function, moving beyond conventional capacity development approaches toward a more systemic, reciprocal, and partner-led model. Discussions will focus on how regional learning, peer exchange, and co-created solutions can help strengthen agricultural innovation systems across the region. A key objective of the workshop is to support the development of a South Asia CapSha regional framework, including priorities for South-South and triangular cooperation, operational mechanisms for implementation, and inputs into the 2026-30 strategy and workplan. By centering the experiences and priorities of national and regional partners, the workshop will help identify how existing capabilities across South Asian NARES and CGIAR centres can be better connected through structured capacity sharing pathways. The outcomes of the consultation are expected to inform a more coordinated regional approach to capacity sharing, supporting stronger partnerships, more effective institutional collaboration, and greater alignment between CGIAR expertise and country-led priorities in South Asia.
