CapSha South Asia Workshop Advances Regional Agenda for Climate-Resilient Agrifood Systems

The CGIAR-Capacity Sharing (CapSha) South Asia Regional Needs Assessment Workshop concluded on 24 June 2026 at the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC), Varanasi, bringing together NARS/NARES leaders, ICAR institutions, CGIAR centers, educational institutions, private sector representatives, and regional partners from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to identify regional capacity needs for climate-resilient agrifood systems.
Over two days, participants identified shared regional challenges, including strengthening technical and organizational capacities, improving access to tools and systems, and creating enabling policy environments. Discussions also emphasized the need for an integrated agrifood systems approach that links crop production with nutrition, post-harvest management, natural resource systems, infrastructure, funding gaps and climate resilience.

A key outcome of the workshop was the recognition of climate change as a practical cross-cutting entry point for future capacity development efforts. Participants highlighted the importance of strengthening adaptation, mitigation, resilience, climate forecasting, science-policy engagement, and leadership capacities to ensure research translates into action.

The workshop outcomes will contribute to the South Asia CapSha regional framework and inform discussions at the International Dryland Conference in New Delhi in September 2026.
