Objectives

  • Explain the principles, benefits, and process of Human-Centered Design (HCD) and its application in innovation development.
  •  Plan and operationalize an HCD project by assembling the right team, designing collaborative spaces, and creating a detailed user research plan with clear goals, methods, and resources.
  •  Conduct user research using qualitative and quantitative methods to gather insights into user needs, behaviours, pain points, and motivations.
  •  Generate and prioritize ideas using structured ideation techniques, and develop prototypes at varying fidelity levels to visualize and test solutions.
  •  Validate solutions through usability testing, A/B testing, heuristic evaluation, and other methods, applying feedback to refine designs.
  •  Implement and monitor innovations using UX benchmarking and continuous iteration to ensure long-term usability, adoption, and impact.
  •  Apply an iterative, user-centered approach to ensure innovations are desirable, feasible, and viable in real-world contexts.

Human-Centered Design: Where People Power Innovation for Exceptional Impact

This course offers a practical, step-by-step journey through the Human-Centered Design (HCD) process. You’ll start by learning how to plan and operationalize projects, building multidisciplinary teams, creating collaborative spaces, and developing user research plans. In the explore phase, you’ll use methods like interviews, observations, and synthesis to uncover user needs and define clear design challenges. The create phase introduces ideation tools such as brainwriting and Crazy 8s, along with prototyping techniques to bring ideas to life. Finally, in the validate and implement phase, you’ll test prototypes through usability testing, A/B testing, and heuristic evaluation, refining them into viable products. With case studies, concept maps, and quizzes, the course emphasizes iteration, evidence-based decisions, and balancing desirability, feasibility, and viability to deliver impactful, real-world solutions.

Target Participants

The course is designed for researchers, implementers, and partners involved in the field of digital agriculture and solution development. It is suitable for individuals who are engaged in research activities, implementing digital agriculture projects, or collaborating as partners in the development and deployment of digital solutions.

Prerequisites

Prior knowledge of the basic concepts of HCD is recommended. We advise you to attend the Micromodule on Introduction to HCD (CIMMYT) on this learning platform first.
